Earliest Roses to Bloom Tour
The extremely cold hardy Scots' and Rugosa roses are the earliest to bloom in the landscape in my collection - I suppose the biological reason might be to complete the flowering season quickly so they can finish ripening their hips before winter. Here I feature the outstanding Scots' roses 'Prairie Peace', 'Doorenbos', 'Stanwell Perpetual' and the rugosas 'Blanc Double de Coubert' and 'Rosaraie de l'Hay'. Also some quick examples to show how own-root roses can recover, even if the above-ground damage is substantial.

Best Lavender for Your Garden
Переглядів 13 тис.14 днів тому
Which type of lavender is best for your garden? It depends on what you want. If your climate is agreeable, English lavender (L. angustifolia) is an excellent choice, and to my nose it has the finest fragrance. For something similar but a little bolder, there's Lavandin (L. x intermedia) growing a little taller in general and with a stronger camphor-like scent. If you're all about the flowers, y...

Alfalfa as a Fertilizer
Переглядів 11 тис.Місяць тому
Rose hobbyists have been using alfalfa (as a tea or topdress fertilizer) for years, but in this video we'll discuss the reasons why alfalfa is an excellent overall soil amendment and nutrient source for all sorts of garden plants. Many thanks to April from Western Alfalfa Milling for joining me on this video and answering our questions. Here are links to their fertilizer brands: www.growanythin...
Planting a New Trial Rose Garden
Переглядів 25 тис.Місяць тому
These rose varieties aren't new to the market - just new to us! We're in the process of evaluating roses and which ones to keep and add to our stock for propagation. Much of this batch came from a generous trading partner in California with a collection of older English (David Austin) roses. We're planting them out for feedback from our visitors and, of course, from channel viewers. If you find...
Mail Order Plants: Buyer Beware
Переглядів 11 тис.Місяць тому
Goodness knows, I have plenty of experience ordering plants, but in recent years we've also become an online plant seller (for delivery within Canada). This has given me plenty of opportunity to consider the benefits and risks of buying & selling plants for mail order and online. Here I'll go through some of those risks and discuss some things a buyer can do the safeguard themselves. As a side ...
A Good Start for Roses: Nitrogen Supplementation
Переглядів 46 тис.Місяць тому
Yes, I'm singling out a single nutrient for special attention: Nitrogen. As mentioned in my previous videos on fertilizer for roses, nitrogen is only one of several nutrients required by roses in relatively high quantities, so why single it out? Because it's commonly deficient and doesn't stick around for long in the soil: regular supplementation (within reason) is likely to improve growth and ...
Portable Power - Solar Panels + Power Station by Bluetti
Переглядів 3,1 тис.Місяць тому
Last year I reviewed a power station made by Bluetti (it was the AC200P at the time) and the top viewer question was about seeing a solar panel setup. Yes, these power stations are compatible with many standard solar panel setups, but in this video I'll be demonstrating a new power station (the AC200L) along with Bluetti's own portable solar panel, the PV420. It can potentially collect 420 watt...
7 Rules for Pruning Roses
Переглядів 93 тис.2 місяці тому
I'm revisiting the topic of rose pruning, focusing on the traditional "rules" and gardening folk wisdom. Some make a lot of sense, others depend on the situation, and yet others are without merit in my opinion. You may remember that I did this topic with basically the same points a few years ago, but since then I've upgraded from SD video to 4K, so I figured it was time for a refresh. Here's th...
Rose Breeder's Nursery: Select Roses with Brad Jalbert

This week I had the chance to visit with world renowned rose breeder Brad Jalbert at his nursery of 34 years: Select Roses. We had a chance to talk about Brad's rose breeding selections, some garden fav...
How Big Nurseries Start Small Plants

Propagate Roses from a Bouquet
Переглядів 88 тис.3 місяці тому
Can you root rose shrubs for the garden from the stems of florist bouquets? This is a question I often hear after holidays like Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. Yes, it's possible - as shown in this video, and for those who enjoy plant propagation, why not give it a shot? There are some caveats about the resulting roses: florists roses are bred and selected for greenhouse cut flower production...
Propagate from Pruning

What I call spring rose pruning is usually in late winter. It's the "structural" pruning where I take off more stems than any other time of year. Of course I removing quite a few stems in poor condition: dead, diseased, damages and thin. But when I take off thick healthy stems for size, shape or thinning purposes, it can feel a bit wasteful. Here's an option: try the same hardwood cutting techn...
When to Water Plants
Переглядів 14 тис.3 місяці тому
How often should I water my plants, and how much? For good reason, these are difficult questions to answer with anything except generalities. It depends. Of course it does! It depends on pot size, soil, temperature, light, humidity and all of the other factors that determine your plant's water usage. So let's at least try to get on the same page and share a vocabulary around how much water shou...

Hi Jason! It’s always been such a blast to watch your videos. May I ask one question? My little yellow roses are thriving and blooming a lot now. Just seven stems are too tall than the whole plants. Can I prune the tall stems to half height after they finish this round of blossom? That will probably be around June or July. And should I prune these tall stems at early morning cloudy day or any time of any day? Thanks so much.

Hi Jason, I purchased 5 knockout rose bushes last year. They all developed the red/black spots. 2 of the plants have died. The remaining 3 are struggling. I decided transplant them to post, do a hard cut and fertilize them really well. My question is, is it safe to plant another rose bush or some other type of plants, in the same spot my roses were previously planted?

Hi, Jason, I love watching your videos as you are always so good at communicating and sharing your knowledge. I live in Washington state and plan to come up to see the farm June 15th and bring some friends with me. You mention phytosanitary certificates to import/export across the border. I intend to call the CFIA and ask if individuals can request spot inspections to get the certificate to take plants for personal use across the border. Do you use one of the approved growing mediums (i.e. potting soil instead of field soil)? I already know you aren't in one of the restricted areas for using potting soil so that's a plus already. 🙂 Many thanks!

Thanks for the info. Looks like it will be easier than I thought to keep these. Do they need to be hardened off, or can you just put them straight outside when the weather warms? AND, if they are put outside into a pot, should they be brought back inside for the winter?

Looking good Jason.👌 This year has been a tough one here, extremely dry, but fortunately got a great rain this past week, filling the water tanks and giving all of the plants a good soaking. So far haven't lost any plants, but it sure was a bit dire. All the fun of living in the high desert. I find it remarkably amazing just how resilient so many plants really are. Glad to see your damaged roses surviving.🤙

So now I have more than 150 seedlings by the window, and they are thriving! Now I look for them in the garden and I discover new ones every day 😀 Your advice is awesome. My rose was dark peach all over the bush for several years. I didn’t prune or fertilize it this year. This year it a med pink. I can’t figure out why it change. Do you know why.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 дні тому

My first thought is that the stretch between peach and pink isn't so drastic that it couldn't be explained by variation due to conditions (temperature can have a pronounced effect on bloom form and color). If it seems otherwise unchanged, that'd be my assumption and I'd just watch to see if there's some return to its more usual color through the season. If not, all things are still on the table (sporting/reversion, rootstock suckers)

I have a climbing rose that was a cutting off of my grandmothers roses, that are over 50 years old now..They’ve climbed up very high on my trellis..& there’s a few skinny limbs with the very top splitting off into three separate vines , resembling a pitch fork. Should I cut all three of those branches off at once to have just one single vine going up? And will they grow back the same way?.. or does that encourage the plant to grow out more brushy and not straight up? Thank u so much! Very informative video! Really appreciate it

Lovely. I have some mini tea roses that were killed to the ground by Seattle's 13 degree days this last summer. They recovered. I did lose many of my uncommon or rare plants such as Allium forrestii. It was the one surviving seed grown out of 5. I won't tell your the whole story but when I but this back into a gallon pot in 2011 (evil lawn grass problems), it grew multiple flowers and I even separated it. Two gallon pots were full of this plant. No seeds. Maybe it needed a certain bug or maybe it needed two separate genetics to set seed. That hurts. Hard to find.
